In our bonsai soil mixture we added one of the greatest inorganic gravels available for bonsai. Vermiculite is a fine, naturally occurring material and retains moisture. It is a bonsai soil additive that is found and mined from China, Brazil, parts of Africa, and the U.S.A.
Vermiculite is found in all our bonsai soil mixes. Our multipurpose mixes carry 50% vermiculite. While our coniferous bonsai soil mixes exhibit 70% of it. Our tropical and subtropical bonsai soil has 30%; this is because of the need for more organic media in these types of trees.
Adding vermiculite as an inorganic material in bonsai soil not only serves your tree magnificently, but also gives it a safe and natural environment. The soil additive called vermiculite is a mineral formed from hydrated mica and resembles mica in its appearance and is extremely light-weight. Having a golden nugget look makes it blend in bonsai soil perfectly and naturally for shows and general bonsai potting soil mixes. It has the ability to expand thus making it retain water better than most inorganic granules.
