Good bonsai soil has many features to offer your bonsai tree, including a well-aerated environment with the proper media to retain moisture and nutrients while at the same time provide excellent drainage.
Penjing Iron Works put together a custom soil blend to provide all the above to our precious bonsai trees. Our mixes were designed with one main objective, optimal root health. Our blends consist primarily of small granular vermiculite and fine pine bark. The vermiculite serves as our inorganic media. Unlike other inorganic gravels, vermiculite actually retains moisture. Therefore, as a granule it helps aerate the soil, facilitates in drainage, yet holds in moisture. Vermiculite is a very advantageous potting media, and we are happy to use it. Pine bark serves as our organic potting additive. Perfect for bonsai, fine pine bark keeps the mixture stay better aerated than other organic matter. It doesn't get muddy, nor will it clog drainage holes or get compacted. Pine bark keeps your roots healthy, holds essential nutrients, and prevents root rot.
