Educate yourself in the art of bonsai with the advice and tips of experienced mentors.

Tip #1

How to create perfect nebari.
The technique of making a large wide trunk and root base is simple if you have a lot of time on your hands. A simple method is to continuously lift the tree higher and higher out of its pot every time you repot. This forces the roots to plump-up and get stronger to stabilize itself.

Tip #2

Make your bonsai grow slanted.
If you want your tree to grow slanted rather than straight up, put something to elevate one end of your pot higher than the other. Having an off level pot will force your tree to grow slanted in the opposite direction in order to compensate. Another way is to grow your tree on the edge of a shaded area. Your tree will want to always reach for the sun, in doing so, it tends to grow slanted from the shade to the sun. Finally, the third way is to force it with one of our bonsai tools, either the trunk splitters or a branch bender.
