Often referred to as nebari, a large wide and tampered root base is a great value to bonsai trees. Many people consider this an extremely important factor when judging the art. The wide base with pronounced grown roots gives the illusion and the impression that the tree is old, established, and healthy, not to mention is looks great. They should show bark, be spread-out, and climb the trunk.
Techniques in achieving nice nebari vary. There are certain wild digs in which target this looks, grafting techniques, transplantation methods exist, and cut-and-heal trials have proven to be successful to mention a few. One technique however is worth noting in a little more detail, and is our hint to you. Every time you repot your tree, raise the tree and slightly expose the base each time, and in years to come, you may have a notable base worth bragging about.
