Thousands of years before Christ ceramic pots were being used in China; however, in what capacity? That is the question we want to pinpoint. Using pots as a functional artistic and complimentary pieces to a plant or tree is what makes an ordinary container into Chinese bonsai pots. Flower pots became increasing popular with the Chinese as high-fired ceramic pots were becoming popular.
Pots were used in all forms of potted gardening. It was found in government buildings and in Buddhist monasteries. The pots housed trees, flowers, plants, and bamboo. However, the most elegant container held what we know today as bonsai.
The pots were being recognized as important element in container gardening. The design on them was important and usually painted or fired. The size and depth was aesthetically pleasing. It soon became important to select the right pot.
