Herbs are often used as an element in bonsai. In penjing, you find them frequently as accessories in the landscape. Many gardeners attribute herbs as a source of spices and food.
Bonsai and penjing tools aren't often associated with the art, but in the industry it's worth mentioning here for the specialized part it plays. Herbs can often be seen next to bonsai as an accent to the display of it, or as an element in penjing. They are not considered weeds or grass, therefore, we mention them alone.
Some types of plants that are used frequently in the hobby are small plant-like specimens. These include varieties of orchids and terrestrial orchids. Cycad and cacti are seen often. You'll find common reed, dwarf dog rose, dwarf sweet-rush, and Hakonechioa. And sure enough, the traditional use of moss to decorate the topsoil in the bonsai pot.
