These types of trees are sub-classified in two categories of either broad-leaf or foliage.

Broad-Leaf

Trees for bonsai include many types of fig or banyan. Other popular species include ebony persimmon and jasmin.

Foilage

There are hundred, if not thousand of types to mention that can be said to be foilage trees. For bonsai we see a variety of maples, especially trident maples, wax trees, elms and hackberry. Also very popular specimens are maiden-hair, pistache, box-trees, willows, tamarisk, and sageretia.
