Species of bamboo common used in penjing are black, quadrangular, and flowered types. Some well known types are Heavy-stem and Common Striped Bamboo. In pots you can use Makino, Formosan, Nandina, and Drawf.
Hard to believe this plant is a grass, but indeed it is. Possibly the most beautiful type. It makes amazing music in wind, durable building material. In China, it is an extremely resourceful material. In penjing and bonsai, it is getting more popular as an element in design.
