The Japanese Black Pine Tree is often regarded as the best specimen for traditional Japan style bonsai creation. It presents a challenge in humid and hot environments. The tree prefers seasons and period of dryness.
The Black Pine (Pinus thunbergii) is a popular evergreen species from Japan, specifically coastal areas of the island. It can also be found in some areas of South Korea. What makes the tree so appealing to bonsai is its ability to have its needles small and in proportion to the overall pot and trunk. Many other types of pines cannot shorten their needles. Do not be mistaken however, the Black Pine can also be a large bonsai specimen as it can easily grow up to 40 meters in height in nature.
It is a very hardy and horticultural candidate, as it is forgiving to salt and other pollutants. Consider the Japanese are often associated with traditional and formal styles, the tree is many time used in competition, especially on formal contests.
Although its tough, the species is vulnerable to certain bugs. The American beetle family of bugs can take its toll. In addition, some types of fungus are also a treat, so keep the tree on the dry side; besides, it does enjoy a dryer climate.
